Braveheart Sword "In the year of our Lord 1314, patriots of Scotland, starving and outnumbered, charged the fields of Bannockburn. They fought like warrior poets. They fought like Scotsmen and they won their freedom. Forever!!" Pretty much every Western Sword enthusiast you'll speak to loved this movie. They'll also be happy to spout off about how historically incorrect it is too, yet won't bear any ill will to it because they loved the movie. Gibson himself points out dozens of inaccuracies in the "directors commentary" DVD of Braveheard - but begs artistic licence and theoretical feasibility. This style of sword is actually closer to the Zweihanders carried by German Landesknecht and Swiss Mercenaries in the 1500s. All that aside it's still a very inspirational movie and to actually handle a sword so close to the movie sword is very powerful. This sword IS powerful, and large but still very wieldy at 5lb3. The main visual difference in my interpretation of this sword design was the addition of profile taper. Rather than having the edges parallel to the tip they taper in for less weight near the tip, along with a bit of distal taper. The pommel is peened. Handle is Jarrah Hardwood, wrapped in a dyed, comfy Chamois cover, with 3mm risers. The ricasso wrap is also dyed chamois epoxied completely to the ricasso (no gaps in the epoxy). I figured unlike the movie sword which was blunt, a removable ricasso cover would be sliced sliding it on and off.
